Laozi (Lao-Tzu) was a legendary philosopher of Ancient China whose influence on Chinese culture is pervasive. Laozi is traditionally regarded as the founder of Daoism (Taoism) which emphasizes living in harmony with the Dao (Tao). Here, Dao (Tao) refers to the source and ideal of all existence. Since free will and desires of people can alter their own nature, Daoism intends to lead students to a return to their natural state. Harmony with Dao implies simplicity and humility, key virtues that are often contrasted to selfish action.
